Tony Matelli
Tony Matelli is a contemporary American artist known for his hyperrealistic sculptures that often explore themes of decay, impermanence, and the human condition. Born in 1971, Matelli gained recognition for his meticulous craftsmanship and ability to create startlingly lifelike representations of ordinary objects and surreal scenarios that have meta-physical and philosophical implications. His work frequently challenges perceptions and evokes strong emotional responses by juxtaposing the familiar with the unsettling. Matelli's sculptures have been exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide including The Whitney Museum of American Art, ARoS Aarhus Kunstmuseum in Denmark and The State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia among many others. He lives and works in New York City.
The weed is a triumph and a failure at the same time. They represent both life and decay. Weeds persevere; you can’t kill them. They are fugitive. —Matelli
